Conservation of RHINOCEROS UNICORNIS ( Rhino )

The population of rhinos is dense in the marshy lands of park Kaziranga and the area of 435 sq. km is unable to sustain the population of 500 rhinos. Thus, there is a struggle for existence and they fight particularly for grazing areas.

Kaziranga National Park

The horn found on the snout of rhino is composed of a matted mass of horny fibres. The price of the rhino horn is very high. Its market value might be around 1 lakh to 2 lakh per kilogram in foreign countries. Its skin was used in the past for making the shield of warriors. Often rhinos are hunt down in an illegal manner for their horns and skins. Last rhino in Uttar Pradesh was killed in 2004. It is estimated that there are now about 1596 rhinos in Kaziranga, Jaldapara, and Manas national parks (Inf. - 24 May 2018). The Indian one-horned rhinos may attain the weight of 2000 kg.

For the protection of rhinoceros the Bengal Govt. has passed "Rhinoceros Act 1932" and for that "Assam Rhinoceros Bill 1954", was also accepted. Armed guards and patrol parties in Kaziranga and Manas now keep around the clock vigil to check poaching activities.
